The Health Information Service (HIS) was set up in 1992 as part of the Patient's Charter. A network of freephone helpline services operates throughout the UK. Callers can ring 0800 66 55 44 and will be connected to their regional service. The HIS has information about all health services including drug services within their area. They also have information about health literature and leaflets, health service waiting times, the rights of patients within the NHS, the standards of NHS services and their complaints systems.

From April 2000 onwards HIS is being incorporated into the NHS Direct, the nurse led health helpline for the UK.
